Adopt a tree!

and help save the tropical forest.

By adopting a tree, you help save the tropical forest

Support the "Biodiversitatis" foundation project aiming to create a nature reserve with a research station and education center in the Sibundoy Valley (Colombia). Take symbolic care of one of the over 150,000 trees in the area that we want to preserve.

Why?

The Tropical Andes region has been described as the richest and most diverse area on Earth, in terms of biodiversity. This "hotspot" comprises less than one percent of the planet`s land area, yet it contains more than a sixth of the world`s plant life. Some estimates put the number of species going extinct due to deforestation of tropical forest at 137 per day.

You can help preserve this unique ecosystem – get your adoption certificate or give this document to a loved one.

As a result of climate changes, 15-37% of land organisms will disappear by 2015.

The team of the „Biodiversitatis” ” Foundation has undertaken activities aiming at creating a nature reserve with a research station and education center in South America. Currently, we are gathering funds to purchase 30 ha of Northern Andean montane forest in the Sibundoy Valley (southern Colombia). The eastern and western slopes of some of the major valleys in this ecoregion have substantially different plants and animals, and many species are restricted to single mountaintops or ranges. These are likely to be the richest tropical montane forests on Earth.

About adoption

How can a symbolic adoption help save the tropical forest?

Your donation will be used to support the project to create a tropical nature reserve. In the Northwestern Andean montane forests, flowering species are extremely diverse, and up to 300 species can be found in a single hectare. This ecosystem is home to spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and andean tapir (Tapirus pinchaque).

We intend to establish a research station in the created nature reserve. This will be the first scientific facility in Valle de Sibundoy and it will be available for researchers from around the world. Our project will allow to conduct not only research on diversity of plants, animals and fungi in the region, but also to carry on long-term observations of the local ecosystem.

You can adopt one or more trees belonging to one of three species: Oreopanax caricaefolium, Myrsine guianensis or Hieronyma colombiana. They are all equally valuable - the cost of taking symbolic care of each individual is PLN 100 (= USD 27).

Oreopanax caricaefolium („mano de oso”). The genus Oreopanax is native to the Americas and it comprises ca. 90 species of shrubs and trees. The leaves of these plants are commonly variously lobed or divided. Their inflorescences are large, composed of the numerous, small flowers.

Myrsine guianensis („cucharo”). This small tree is found in Latin America usually it grows up to 7-8 m, but larger individuals reaching 20 m were also reported. The leaves of this species are entire (undivided). The flowers are white, inconspicuous. This species produces green or brown berries.

Hieronyma colombiana („motilón”). Hieronyma species are distributed from Mexico to Bolivia. Specimens can reach over 50 m in height. These plants have found medical applications. Their seeds are used to control intestinal parasites and the bark decoction relieves cough.

As a Thank You Gift for supporting biodiversity conservation we will send you an English-language certificate confirming your commitment to the project. You can also give such a document to a loved one - enter the appropriate data in the online form.

Who we are?

The "Biodiversitatis" foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve biodiversity. To achieve our goals, we established a team of scientists, social campaigners and environmental activists. We cooperate with local communities as well as with public and private sector entities. Our goal is to preserve regions characterized by extraordinary biodiversity in cooperation with local communities.

Our studies concern various aspects of biodiversity - its description and analysis. We conduct research on ecology, taxonomy and phylogeny which are supplemented with ecological niche modeling and modern techniques of micromorphological imaging.

We encourage you to visit our website (www.biodiversitatis.com.pl) to get acquainted with the scientific profiles and publications of the Board Members and our Scientifc Council.

Moreover, the aim of our actions is to educate local communities on the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Biodiversitatis/) to get the latest updates and information about our current activities.
